On October 20, 2023 the Federal and Alberta Governments announced they are partnering on a 2023 Canada-Alberta Drought Livestock Assistance response to assist livestock producers affected by drought and extreme growing conditions.
Funding for this joint AgriRecovery initiative is cost-shared through the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP) and administered by Agriculture Financial Services Corporation (AFSC).
Livestock producers in specified municipalities (including Wheatland County and surrounding municipalities) will be able to apply for financial support to cover feed costs incurred resulting from lost grazing days for eligible breeding animals on hand as of December 31, 2023 up to $150 per head.
Applications opened October 30 and are available online using AFSC Connect. Applications must be submitted by midnight January 15, 2024.
You will need to provide your Premises ID and the number of eligible animals both on June 1 and December 31. Payments will be calculated on the head reported on hand as of December 31, and June 1 inventory record may be used for verification purposes.
You will also need to provide:
-
the date the eligible animals were initially placed on pasture
-
the usual date eligible animals would have been removed from pasture
-
the date you made alterations to your usual grazing practices. This includes various drought management strategies such as early weaning, creep feeding calves, feeding stockpiled feed, using additional pasture/grazing lands such as row crops or hay fields, removing the entire herd from pasture and locating to new grazing source.
-
the municipal location of the pasture
Benefits will be based on a feed-need calculation as outlined in the following example:
